What the houses here are, how the place came to have them, and when to come.

Manali is at the head of the Kullu valley on the Beas, and the buildings that made the valley known do not use mortar at all. Kath-kuni is the technique: courses of roughly dressed local stone alternating with horizontal deodar beams, pegged at the corners, so the wall is a dry stack held together by weight and joinery. It flexes in an earthquake rather than shattering, which is why Kullu houses came through 1905 while masonry around them did not. Slate roofs, cantilevered upper storeys with a carved wooden gallery, and the ground floor given to livestock so their warmth rises into the rooms above. Hadimba temple in Manali and Naggar Castle downstream are the show pieces. Old Manali, Vashisht and the villages up the side valleys have the domestic version.

Deodar is the whole reason it works. The forests above the town are the material, the shade and the smell of the place at once.
